Questions chapter 12-16
Question 1- King Solomon had many wives and two of which were claiming that they were the mother to one of the many kids he had. King Solomon revealed their true feelings and relationship towards the child by suggesting to cut the baby in two, meaning each woman would receive half. By coming up with this strategy, he was able to come to a conclusion of the non-mother as the woman who entirely approved of this insane idea, while the actual mother would beg that they don't cut the baby in two and the child committed to the care of her rival. Jim took this story as it is more about a whole child, not a half child and Solomon would have shown more respect for children if he had not had so many.
Question 2- When Huck and Jim got separated in the fog Huck joked around with Jim and told him that they weren't ever separated and that it was all a dream. They way Jim reacted showed that Jim actually cared about Huckleberry and he didn't want Huck to think that it was a dream because while they were separated Jim was really worried about Huck and if he was okay.
Question 3- Jim is concerned because he is a black man and at that time they weren't accepted as human beings, and along with that they weren't very educated and never were taught anything but what they hear on the streets or what is passed down through their families. That's how they get "educated." So all he has ever heard or learned about would be the superstitions or myths of good fortune which is all a black man would want back then given the fact that they were slaves.
Question 4 -
he feels this way because Huck feels bad for treating Jim really bad. Not everyone had the same rights back then and black people espeacially, so he felt really bad for saying what he said so he apologized.
Question 5-
Chapter 16 is mainly about Huck's inner struggle with the decision of whether to give Jim up or help him escape. Turning Jim in would ruin the bond they have created with together, and would likely make him feel terrible if he decided to turn him in. However, if he helps Jim escape to freedom, he could potentially be seen as an abolitionist and be held responsible for Jim's escape which could get him into a world of trouble andhe would not want to be seen that way. No matter which choice he makes, he would lose something. When the men came looking for the missing slaves, Huck made the decision to help Jim. He convinced the men that smallpox was on the boat and they would be exposed if they entered. Of course the men did not enter and let Huck on his way. I believe Huck chose to help Jim, because at the time, Huck didn't have very many friends and was extremely alone in the world. He could either go fall to the society standards, or he could help one of the few people who he had a real connection with. Knowing how it feels to be alone, he made the right decision.

The idea with running the raft is that jim and huck aren't completley sure about the king and duke because they don't know if they are going to scam them next. Huck and the "Clan" on the raft have only been traveling at night to avoid Jim possibly being caught as a runaway. Since the King and Duke take over the raft, the Duke comes down to a solution. The solution is that while traveling during the day with Jim on the raft, If they get caught, they will pretend as if they had captured Jim as the missing runaway slave and are taking him back to his owner. The duke comes to believe that this is a great solution because Jim doesn't have to hide during the day an they can travel down the river and not waste time during the day. If they were to be questioned an told someone the runaway slave was found, word would travel fast and the owners would expect to have their slave back. But I think that's risky if they caught being liars. If they were to get caught they would be in huge trouble.

I think that he said this because the King and the Duke being as greedy as they are, decided to act as the brothers of a dead man to gain his land and wealth he left behind. Question 1- One of the reasons that people stayed up with the dead was to the protect their body from anything that would ruin the body and how it looked. Like insects and other rodents. They wanted to make sure that the body was kept safe. After a person died in this time , they had to bury the body the very next day because at that time there was apparently no possible way to preserve the body of rotting and decomposing, so they would watch over it. According to some traditions they would make sure the corpse was actually dead instead of the body sleeping or in a coma. They would also perform blessings upon the body or spirit to make their journey easier.

In the book he told Mary Jane that the family would be together again, he told Mary this because she was very upset thinking that the family wasn't going to be all together once more and didn't want to be separated any more. He felt as though he needed to comfort and help her through her trial and that was the only thing that he thought would calm her down.
Question 3- The lawyer had all four men meet at the tavern to discern or discovery who each man actually was . In order to do that he needed to do two things. First he has all four men sign a paper and compared the signatures to ones he received in letters, and it showed that the Duke and the King were fakes and the King gets out of it by saying that the real William serves as a scribe to Harvey and that since William has a broken arm they can't prove who is who. Questions 31-35
Question 1- At this point in the book Jim is captured as a runaway slave which then causes Huck to be upset. He tries to figure out what he can do, if anything, to change the situation and considers writing Miss Watson informing her where Jim is. Huck would've also explained how to get him back to her but realizes that she wanted to sell him in the first place so returning him wouldn't be any better than where he is now. So Huck comes to a decision to pray that Jim finds Miss Watson but Huck but then realizes "You can't pray a lie" and that praying would only mean that he was praying for something that he didn't want to actually happen. Jim running away with Huck was meant to escape slavery and writing a letter and saying a prayer would defeat the whole purpose.
Question 2- When Huck wrote the letters to Miss Watson they were informing her on where Jim was and how she could get him back to her. Huck never actually sent the letters and instead tore them up because from the beginning Jim was trying to escape Miss Watson. So therefore sending the letters to Miss Watson would completely defeat the purpose. Also if Huck ended up sending the letters it would reveal that he is still alive which would have not only his Dad and Miss Watson coming after him but the law enforcement as well because he had helped Jim get as far as he did.
Question 3- Overall Tom Sawyer is a good kid and would do anything for Huck knowing that he's been through a lot and that he would do the same for him. He is also super adventurous and risk taking so when Huck asks him to help him get Jim back he's all in. Yet when Huck said "Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a n***** stealer!” it was a bit dramatic given the fact that he, himself, was the one to ask him to do it.
Question 4-
a. At this point in the story Huck and Tom escape the house and go to town in hope to find out more about Jim but as they were doing so they ran into a mob of angry people. As the mob passed Huck saw the King and the Duke tied to a rail tared and feathered to the point where they didn't look human. Huck had every reason to be upset at them but instead he felt bad. That's when he said the phrase “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”. I think that he said this because even though he knew they lied and ripped off so many people, seeing even them in that state was dreadful.
b. After Huck had heard what the towns people had done to the King and the Duke he went home not feeling as cocky anymore and continued ti feel bad for them. So I think that when Huck said “But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” he was referring to the fact that they deserved everything they got but his conscious took over and he still felt bad for the even if he has no reason to.
Question 5- In chapter 34 Huck and Tom try and find a harder way to break Jim free because they wanted to make the escape mysterious and have people really question how he go tout. I think that they did this to make sure that if the mission was successful that their tracks were covered and no one knew that Huck and Tom had anything to do with Jim's escape. So overall their plan needed to be complicated to ensure all three of them walked away free and out of future trouble.

Questions 36-40
In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom’s motivation? What is Huck’s motivation?
Tom wants the escape to be as dramatic and as a much of a game as possible. It's like a fantasy for him. He wants to have an adventure like the people in books do. He's trying to make Jim a real prisoner, and he's using impractical ideas. Huck's motivation is that he genuinely cares about Jim and what happens to him. He doesn't want him to be a slave again. He wants Jim to have his freedom. Huck is willing to commit a "sinful" act for Jim because they have a true friendship.
What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they “let on” about something? Why do they do this?
When Huck and Tom say "let on", they are talking about telling everyone. They say this because Tom suggests that they should dig the hole with picks, but tell everyone (let on) that they used case knives instead. They were talking about how immoral this situation was, and the only way to get Jim out is to dig him out with one thing, but make people think they used another.
Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle’s slave? What are his motivations for this?
Tom is writing the letters so that people will know that something is up so they can see his escape plan. After all the hard work they put into their plan, Tom doesn't want it to go without a hitch. he wants something to go wrong. Tom believes in excitement and doing things with adventure. He wants the plan to be very exciting and by warning people that somethings up will make their entire plan more exciting. He is writing the letters anonymously, warning his aunt and uncle about his plans with his band of desperate gangsters plan to steal Jim. he also found religion and because of that he warned the family what was going on and that their plan would go perfectly. Toms motivation is just for the glory of the escape. He wanted people to see his glorious plan and how successful his plan was in the end. He also wanted some more adventure to go on in his life. If he got people to come after him and chase him then he would have a good story to tell and an adventure that he was always looking for.
We’ve worked a great deal on this novel’s satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim’s escape by Tom and Huck satire?
This is satire because it pokes fun at all the great escapes of the day. The failed escape of Louis XVI being one of the escapes they use for reference. Tom having read many of the stories about the planned escape of King Louis decided to use some of the elements that he read in the book. When they finish the getting Jim out of the cabin and they are on the raft, he says " Boys, we done it elegant!--- 'deed we did. I wish we'd 'a' had the handling of Louis XVI, there wouldn't 'a' been no ' Son of Saint Louis, ascend to heaven' wrote down in his biography" Tom was saying that they should have been in charge of getting the King out of the castle because then he wouldn't have died.
Towards the end of the chapter Huck says “I knew he was white inside” about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean?
Jim wanted to save Tom from the bullet that was lodged in his leg, and he wouldn't let the raft drift until tom had been seen by a doctor. I think Huck said this because the had just gotten Jim free and he was a runaway slave, and he wanted a doctor that would surely turn him in to save Tom. Jim said if the roles were reversed, Tom would do the same. It was almost like Jim thinking like a white man.

Final Questions 41
Question 1
Huck feels guilty because she thinks she lost Sid (Tom), and he feels bad knowing that he is still alive and that he helped the slave get away. He doesn't want to look her in the face because he's afraid that if he does, he will tell her everything they did and she will be mad. She expressed so much concern for him even, and the feeling of guilt is overpowering because he made her worry and caused some trouble to help Jim escape. Right after this, Huck and Sally stay up a little longer talking about "Sid" and if Huck thought he was lost of hurt. This shows that she truly has compassion for Huck and Tom, and when he is lying to this woman that has done so much to help and keep him safe.
In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from some wheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?
Jim was so worried and guilty that tom had gotten shot while getting him free that he was willing to sacrifice his newly earned freedom to save Tom. Jim is a thoughtful and kind man. He would do anything to, save his friend who got him and saved him from slavery. The doctor found Tom too injured to be left alone while he gets help, so he says that he needs help, and outcomes Jim. When Jim heard that , he decided that he needed to help and would loose everything to help Tom out. Jim is faithful and the Doctor could tell he was exhausted from being worked too hard lately. Jim was a great 'nurse' to Tom, caring for him and helping no matter what even when it put his life at stake. He was a great man and helped everyone and was a pretty good slave.
What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)?
Tom wants to live a life of adventure and he wants people to know that it was him. When he dropped the bomb shell of Miss Watson's passing and that she set Jim free in her will and they were freeing an already free slave, you could see that he wanted the thrill of the adventure more than the reward. He knew that Jim was free but saw it as a way to have a safe adventure. Tom has been keeping the secrets about the death of Miss Watson and the fact that Jim is free tells me that he will do anything to have an adventure. Including freeing someone who is already free.
You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck.
Huck was a very brave and adventure seeking boy. From the beginning of the novel I could tell from the way he was ready and wanted to be in the band of robbers that he was very interesting and sought out adventure in every way. He was also a very smart kid , when he was placed in a pickle he always found a way out of it . He faked his own death and that shows that he was a huge problem solver. Lastly he was very generous he tended to help anyone who needed it. He helped Jim even though it put him in risk because many people would look down upon him and think differently of him. In my opinion he is a very big role model and has shown me throughout the book how I want to be.
